Going into the wild in child-robot interaction studies: issues in social robotic development

چکیده
As robots move into more human centric environments we require methods to develop robots that can naturally interact with humans. Doing so requires testing in the real-world and addressing multidisciplinary challenges. Our research is focused on Child-Robot Interaction which includes very young children, for example toddlers, and children diagnosed with autism. More traditional forms of human-robot communication, such as speech or gesture recognition, may not be appropriate with these users, where as touch may help to provide a more natural and appropriate means of communication for such instances. In this paper, we present our findings on these topics obtained from a project involving a spherical robot that acquires information regarding natural touch from analysing sensory patterns over-time to characterize the information. More specifically, from this project we have derived important factors for future consideration, we describe our iterative experimental methodology of testing in and out of the ‘wild’ (lab based and real world), and outline discoveries that were

ROBotic Open-architecture Technology for Cognition, Understanding and Behavior
We summarise two human-robot interaction studies investigating a drumming experience with Kaspar, a humanoid child-sized robot, and human participants. Our aim 1 is not to have Kaspar just replicate the human’s drumming, but to engage in a ‘social manner’, i.e. in a call and response turn-taking interaction. The interactions are discussed in terms of imitation, turntaking, and the effect of gen...
متن کاملPlanning Based System for Child-Robot Interaction in Dynamic Play Environments
This paper describes the initial steps towards the design of a robotic system that intends to perform actions autonomously in a naturalistic play environment. At the same time it aims for social human-robot interaction (HRI), focusing on children. We draw on existing theories of child development and on dimensional models of emotions to explore the design of a dynamic interaction framework for ...
متن کاملDistance-Based Computational Models for Facilitating Robot Interaction with Children
Sensing and interpreting the user’s activities and social behavior, monitoring the dynamics of the social context, and selecting and producing appropriate robot action are the core challenges involved in using robots as social tools in interaction scenarios. In social human-robot interaction, speech and gesture are the commonly considered interaction modalities. In human-human interactions, int...
متن کاملEngaging Children in Social Behavior: Interaction with a Robot Playmate through Tablet-based Apps
There has been an emerging use of touchscreen-based smart devices, such as the iPad, for assisting in education and communication interventions for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). There has also been growing evidence of the utilization of robots to foster social interaction in children with ASD. Unfortunately, although interventions using the tablet have been successfully implemen...
متن کاملImitation and Mechanisms of Shared Attention: A Developmental Structure for Building Social Skills
This paper explores the use of imitation in an on-going research program aimed at enabling a humanoid robot to communicate naturally with humans. Our group has constructed an upper-torso humanoid robot, called Cog, in part to investigate how to build intelligent robotic systems by following a developmental progression of skills similar to that observed in human development. Just as a child lear...
